Cannabis edibles are a popular way to consume—but they're also the easiest to overdo if you're not careful. Because edibles are processed through your digestive system, effects can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to start and last several hours. Here's how to dose edibles safely.
Start Low: 2.5–5mg THC
For beginners, start with 2.5mg or 5mg THC per serving. Many gummies come in 5mg or 10mg pieces; you can cut a 10mg gummy in half. Avoid the temptation to take more because you "don't feel anything yet"—wait at least 2 hours before considering another dose.
Why Waiting Matters
Edibles don't hit like smoking. Inhaled cannabis reaches your bloodstream quickly; edibles must be digested first, so onset is delayed. Taking a second dose too soon is a common cause of overconsumption. Set a timer, have a snack, and give it time. Our consumption guide has more on duration of effects.
Read the Label
Washington requires THC content on packaging. Look for "Total THC" or "THC per serving" so you know exactly how much you're taking. For more on understanding labels, see our how to read a cannabis label post and product education.
If You Overconsume
Stay calm, stay hydrated, and rest in a safe place. Effects will pass. Avoid driving or operating machinery. For more tips, read our overconsumption section. Ready to shop? Browse our Yakima, Mount Vernon, or Pullman menus for low-dose edibles.
