Washington Cannabis Laws You Should Know (2025)

TL;DR

In Washington you must be 21+ to buy and use cannabis. Purchase limits apply (e.g., 1 oz flower). Use only in private; never drive under the influence. Check the Washington State LCB for official rules.

Recreational cannabis is legal in Washington for adults 21 and older—but there are rules. Here's what you need to know to stay on the right side of the law. For official information, always check the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB).

Age and ID

You must be 21 or older to purchase, possess, or use recreational cannabis in Washington. A valid government-issued ID (driver's license or state ID) is required at dispensaries. No exceptions for out-of-state visitors—they must still be 21+.

Purchase and Possession Limits

Adults 21+ may purchase and possess: up to 1 ounce of flower (or 7 grams of concentrates); 16 ounces of solid edibles; 72 ounces of liquid edibles; and more. Limits are per transaction and for personal use. Dispensaries will not sell over the legal limit.

Where You Can Use

Cannabis use is allowed only in private spaces (e.g., your home or another private residence with permission). It is illegal to consume in public—parks, sidewalks, cars, etc. Landlords and employers can restrict use on their property. Our consumption guide has more on legal consumption.

Driving

Never drive under the influence of cannabis. Washington has DUI laws that apply to THC. Plan ahead: use at home or have a designated driver. See our driving safety section for more.

Where to Buy Legally

Purchase only from licensed dispensaries like Happy Time. We have locations in Yakima, Mount Vernon, and Pullman. Find your nearest store and order online for pickup. Stay legal, stay safe.
